A homeware mark has a harder job than most. It has to survive all those surfaces, at every size, in a single color, and still feel like an invitation rather than a stamp. The name gave me the way in. In myth, Calypso was the nymph who welcomed travelers to her island and made them want to stay. I began by drawing her with her arms lifted toward the north star, then kept abstracting: the figure became a silhouette, the silhouette became a curve, the curve became a letter. What remained was a "Y" opening upward, holding a four-pointed star. Everything around that letter stays deliberately quiet. Thin geometric capitals, one custom letterform, "HOME" set in wide tracking to steady the base. Forest green, charcoal and warm ivory came from the products themselves the rim of a plate, the handle of a pot, the weave of linen. At the width of a storefront and at the width of a thumbnail on the underside of a bowl, the star is still there.
